Over 100 young people get support to 'Beat the Competition...Into the World of Work
The btc hosted their unique, one-day, youth employment event on Friday 28th June in a bid to combat local youth unemployment.
The event, which was held in partnership with Stevenage Borough Council, featured a huge display board of over 100 current local employment opportunities - ranging from apprenticeships and placements to full and part-time jobs which attendees could browse and apply for. A variety of career skills workshops, hosted by Wenta trainers, also took place throughout the day giving attendees tips on how to give their CV the ‘X-Factor’, how to present themselves online, how to ‘Stand Out From The Crowd’ and ‘Winning Interview Skills’. Local organisations such as The Job Centre, Youth Connexions and North Herts College were all on hand at the event too to provide advice on the world of employment.
Around 114 local 16-24 year olds engaged with the event in total and even the Youth Mayor, 17 year old Abasiakara Mboho, also known as ABK, popped in to see what the event was all about!
All those that registered online for the event and attended on the day were also entered into a competition prize draw to win a brand new iPad Mini, supported by the Hertfordshire LEP. The competition winner was drawn at the end of the event and the winner was announced as Stevenage resident Rebecca Stagg, a recent graduate of the University of Portsmouth. She said:
“I thought the event went very well, all the staff were very helpful and welcoming on arrival. There was a large amount of useful information on local work placements and full time job opportunities in a number of different work sectors. From attending the seminar on interview skills I came away with lots of knowledge on how to prepare and conduct myself throughout the interview process, which is very helpful, as I now feel more confident that I can succeed in any future interview opportunities that come my way!”
If you’re 16 – 24 years old, from the Stevenage area and looking for work but wasn’t able to make the event, don’t worry, we’ve uploaded all of the opportunities online.
