How to beat the competition was the focus of a major event in June linking local buyers and sellers at the Business & Technology Centre (btc) in Stevenage.

The free one-day event was run in partnership with Stevenage Borough Council and more than a hundred budding entrepreneurs and established businesses from across Stevenage and Hertfordshire took part.

The event was officially opened by Sharon Taylor, Leader of Stevenage Borough Council, and Chris Pichon, Chief Executive of Enterprise Agency Wenta, which manages the btc.

Interactive seminars ranged from networking for success and closing the sale to selling to local authorities and there were also practical workshops on creating effective promotional campaigns, improving personal presence and optimising PR and social media.

Each discussion was led by expert speakers from Stevenage Borough Council, Wenta and North Herts College as well as SSW Associates, Advancement Careers, Smart Source GB and Magnite PR.

In addition to the training and networking opportunities available, more than 35 local buyers posted over 200 business leads on the day.

Following the event suppliers will be linked with local buyers who are looking for a particular service, real job opportunities they are waiting to fill or who will be reviewing their current suppliers in coming months and want a list of local suppliers to consider.

Ros Beattie, btc Centre Manager, said: “What set our ‘beat the competition’ event apart was that it combined expert training on how to stand out from the crowd, business networking with local businesses as well as the opportunity to pick up real sales opportunities all in one place. It scored a hat trick over other standard business events.”

Neil O’Connell from Landshuttle, which provides UK wide airport transfers and chauffeur drive services, attended the event and said: “I would urge other local business to get involved with any future events like Beat the Competition. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and benefited greatly from it.”
